Summary:The Quality Control Lab Technician is responsible for testing hot mix asphalt and aggregates to ensure adherence to federal, state, and/or customer specifications. This position works closely with asphalt plants, lab personnel, and government agencies. The Quality Control Lab Technician has the responsibility for quality control testing on projects as required by specifications. The Lab Technician is responsible to perform the quality control testing of the soils, aggregate, and asphalt, as well as report test results to the lab supervisor, and help with equipment calibration.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Perform daily QC testing on hot mix asphalt as required; use accepted methods to inspect, sample and test aggregates, asphalt or other materials for the purpose of quality control.Assist in mix design development and changes in plant production.Perform stockpile analysis on incoming aggregates and RAP stockpiles as needed.Develop and maintain relationships with key customers, facility managers, DOT personnel, State, County and Municipal personnel, internal staff, and suppliers.Perform projects and other duties as assigned.Perform asphalt sample collection to analyze asphalt mix to ensure accuracy; perform data collections and reporting of readings.Qualifications:High school diploma or its equivalent preferred. CTQP Paving Level 1 required, Level 2 preferred.6+ months of related experience.An understanding of the road construction industry and the ability to work under deadlines in a fast-paced environment.Understanding of DOT specifications and standards preferred.Basic knowledge of measuring and calculating square yards, slopes, densities, and yields is required.Strong analytical and communication skills; very detail oriented and organized.Knowledge and ability to perform mathematical skills (adding, subtracting, division, multiplication, percentages, and weights).Ability to understand and follow instructions; function effectively as part of a team; ability to work under pressure; communicate with supervisors, co-workers and the public.Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals; must be able to read and use measuring devices.Ability to travel on a regular basis; valid driver's license with a driving record that meets Company standards.Proficiency in MS Office. Familiarity with Oracle Enterprise One is a plus.Physical Demands:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, kneel, walk, talk, see, hear, push, pull, climb, bend and stoop. The employee frequently is required to stand, (for up to 8 eight hours), walk (occasionally on rough terrain/in varying weather conditions), climb, use manual dexterity to operate tools used in the course of work, hear sufficient to hear conversations in person and via telephone and radio, and vision sufficient for distance sight and to read diagrams, manual reports, rules, regulations, laws and plans. The employee is occasionally required to reach, push and pull with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Physical dexterity may involve stretching, proper placement of legs, and use of arms and hands in repetitive motions. The employee must be able to maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities occurring at the site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment and the movement of mobile equipment.
