Save the Chimps Care Technician II ORGANIZATIONAL MISSION AND HISTORY Save the Chimps operates the largest chimpanzee sanctuary in the world. Located on nearly 200 acres, the Sanctuary, located on the Treasure Coast of Florida, provides lifetime care and enrichment for chimpanzees rescued from research laboratories, entertainment, and the pet trade. Save the Chimps was established in 1997 and is home to nearly 250 chimpanzees. The work of the organization is accomplished by a nonprofit board of directors, more than 70 full-time employed staff, and a number of community volunteers. POSITION OVERVIEW The Care Technician 2 (CT2) position is responsible for performing highly skilled physical and mentally intensive tasks in the care and well-being of the chimpanzees. This is a full-time, non-exempt position (40 hours per weeks). A CT2 is assigned to one of four sections within the sanctuary, and provides direct assistance to the CT1s and CT3 in their section. A CT2 is responsible for the safe, compassionate, and efficient operation of the care needs for the chimpanzee groups. A CT2 must identify and locate all chimpanzees under their care three times daily and immediately report any missing individuals to the Director of Chimpanzee Care Services. A CT2 is responsible for feeding, medicating, and observing the chimpanzees in their assigned sections. A CT2 is also responsible for other husbandry duties such as cleaning, shifting, island access, and enrichment. A CT2 must perform regular observations of the chimpanzees in their section both while the chimpanzees are inside the building and outside on the island. As such, the CT2 must have a working knowledge of chimpanzee behaviors and be able to respond to disputes by appropriately shifting and separating chimpanzees. A CT2 is responsible for filling out the daily log book for which ever building they are working and to read existing logs entries from previous days. A CT2 is responsible for fostering a safe working environment and the positive mentorship of CT1s in the section. Additionally, CT2s are responsible for providing a safe working environment for the maintenance department to do repairs and oversee all activities concerning the building they are working. In the absence of the CT3, CT2s are responsible for determining a workable schedule with regard to chimpanzee husbandry and staff breaks. CT2s are expected to act as friendly ambassadors of the staff to sanctuary volunteers. CT2s are expected to know and be able to utilize all radio calls. In essence, it is the responsibility of the CT2 to ensure that their assigned section is safe, functional, and clean; and that the chimpanzees are well cared for and to do these duties with a positive team spirit. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS * Follow all chimpanzee care policies and procedures outlined in the Supervisor Manual * Feed chimpanzees * Operate chimpanzee doors * Safely unlock and lock locks and doors leading to chimpanzee housing areas, including indoor cages and chimpanzee islands * Direct day-to-day operations of a chimpanzee building, including cleaning, building care and general maintenance, and social management of chimpanzees * Direct Caregivers in daily tasks * Observe all chimpanzees daily for signs of illness or injury, and report observations to Veterinarians * Report chimpanzee social or behavioral changes and/or concerns to the Director of Behavior and Research, Veterinarian, or Director of Chimpanzee Care Services * Observe and if necessary intervene in chimpanzee fights * Monitor the condition and maintenance of mesh, fencing, windows, concrete, benches, platforms, straps and other structures and equipment within the chimpanzee buildings and on the islands. Report damage to the Director of Facilities or Director of Facilities and Project Management as appropriate * Report basic maintenance repairs (e.g. lights out, non-functioning fans, leaks, etc.) to the Maintenance Manager * Document illness, injuries, maintenance needs, chimpanzee separations, completion of regular building tasks (aka side work ), and other notable events on a dry erase board or monthly record * As required by the Veterinarian, separate individual chimpanzees for physicals or health monitoring * Follow all instructions from the Veterinarian and/or Director of Chimpanzee Care Services for special care and feeding of ill or injured chimpanzees * Conduct introductions of chimpanzees as directed by a veterinarian, the behaviorist, or the Director of Chimpanzee Care Services * Load golf carts with meals, enrichment, Gatorade, and any other items needed for chimpanzee meals * Drive golf carts, treating the carts with care and observing all speed and safety rules. * Transfer items from golf carts to food carts at each building * Unlock security gates when arriving at a building, and lock security gates when departing from the building vicinity * Know chimpanzee identities at assigned building * Count and determine the location of all chimpanzees at assigned building, and other buildings as requested * Prepare and organize cleaning supplies, using products conservatively in order to reduce waste and maximize supply resources * Give medications, vitamins, and bottled drinks such as Gatorade to the chimpanzees, as prescribed by the Veterinarian * Check locks and security of guillotine doors, and require two other checks of locks and doors prior to accessing chimpanzee living areas. Re-lock or replace any locks that open when checked * Rinse and scrub the outdoor patio area and indoor cages at your assigned building and at other buildings as needed, paying special attention to safety measures while completing the tasks * Clean islands, including picking up trash, toys and enrichment items * Distribute enrichment on the islands, scattering items over a wide range and in different locations to ensure access to enrichment by all chimpanzees * Check the function of lixits (chimpanzee drinking water) on the islands and in cages to assure the chimps have water at all times; report any non-functioning or leaking lixits to the maintenance department * Wash all blankets and stuffed toys in the washing machine and hang to dry * Hand wash large toys or toys which may damage washing machines * Clean and return tools and other cleaning equipment to proper storage areas * Thoroughly clean drains * Handle and dispose of trash * Clean and organize storage rooms, electrical rooms, and bathrooms * Keep exterior areas around the buildings and clotheslines organized and free of trash or debris * Complete weekly/monthly side work task lists * Assist with lifting or carrying anesthetized chimps during veterinary procedures, following all directions given by the Veterinarian * Monitor breathing or other vital signs of chimpanzees recovering from anesthesia, as directed by the Veterinarian * Supervise movement and/or transport of chimpanzee transport cages * Oversee secure movement of chimpanzees from a transport cage into a building following chimpanzee moves or veterinary procedures * Prepare, count, chop, cut, bin, bag or otherwise organize chimpanzee meals, ensuring that all food is in good condition and suitable for eating. Be aware of proper building counts and food restrictions (e.g. allergies.) * Prepare chimpanzee enrichment and drinks, which may include: counting, chopping with knives, shears, or loppers; stuffing devices with items; freezing items; using industrial-strength kitchen equipment; other tasks as needed * Clean and maintain food preparation areas, including the kitchen, garage, and Ted Shed * Help other members of the chimpanzee care, veterinary, maintenance, and kitchen staff complete their tasks as needed * Monitor the safety of co-workers, chimps and others, and immediately alert others to unsafe conditions or situations * Report general safety concerns or suggestions to Operations Manager, or Director of Chimpanzee Care Services * Be familiar with Emergency Response codes and protocols. Report and respond to emergencies as needed * Load and shoot darts * Participate in team meetings, all staff meetings, staff training and education sessions, and emergency response drills * Train others, including volunteers and new employees, in the performance of tasks; * Work evening shifts or overnight shifts as assigned * Perform other duties as assigned KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS * Must have a thorough knowledge of and a commitment to Save the Chimps, Inc. s mission, safety policies and caregiver operations * Must have the ability to interact with individuals at all levels of the organization, (i.e. management, staff and peers) * The ability to work as a member of a team and share ideas and thoughts * Must be able to recognize and correct employee situations involving potentially harmful behaviors (i.e. gossiping) * Be able to work well under pressure and have the ability to multi-task when required EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE * Associate s or Bachelor s degree preferred * Minimum of five (5) years experience at an AZA accredited facility or commensurate experience * Excellent communication skills to promote team work; * Ability to understand and following written and verbal instructions; * Accuracy and attention to detail * Excellent written and verbal communication skills * Ability to perform tasks with accuracy and attention to detail PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. * While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; stand for long periods of time; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs, step stools, ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear; able to push and pull metal doors. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and team lift in excess of 25 lbs.
