Position Summary: Florida Atlantic University's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute is seeking a Biological Research Technician, Fort Pierce, FL. The Biological Research Technician performs a variety of specialized technical tasks in such fields as biochemistry, physiology, histology, microbiology, etc. Summary of Responsibilities: Assists with the day-to-day operations of the lab. Assists in the preparation and execution of experiments, projects and services. Helps to establish priorities and ensure adherence to schedules, efficiency, and quality of output. Provides routine maintenance and care of experimental systems and animals which includes husbandry, water quality, live feeds, and larviculture. Acts as a resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results. Reviews, tests, evaluates and modifies equipment and methodology ensuring data integrity. Assists in developing new methodology. Assesses and provides equipment maintenance and needs and assists with the provision of equipment. Designs and fabricates specialized equipment as required. Participates in the development and implementation of unit procedures and work methods. Makes recommendations to improve unit efficiency including recommendations on staff requirements. Compiles experimental and analytical data and enters data into digital record keeping software (e.g., Excel spreadsheets). Prepares reports using word processing software (e.g., MS Word) and analyzes and discusses results and their interpretation with others. Maintains records and files. Maintains and participates in the development of computerized information systems. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor of Science from an accredited institution and five years of experience in fish physiology, fish nutrition, biochemistry, and developmental biology required. Knowledge of biochemistry and biology laboratory principles, practices, procedures, equipment and materials, laboratory safety and hazard communication is required. Knowledge of proper labeling, use, storage and disposal of chemicals is required. Must be a motivated, organized, self-starter, capable of working independently as well as in a team environment. Ability to collect samples and maintain their integrity and validity is required. Ability to conduct field work including and not limited to broodstock/juvenile collection and fish samples (e.g. blood, eggs, tissues, etc.) preferred. Experience in presenting scientific data/analyzing data and writing scientific reports preferred. Experience with problem solving/instrument troubleshooting preferred. Laboratory experience in centrifugation, thin layer chromatography, ion exchange chromatography, liquid chromatography, amino acid analysis, wet and dry ashing techniques, lipid extraction, lipid separation, fatty acid analysis, and protein assays through operation of HPLC, GC-MS, ICP-OES spectrometer, plate readers, nitrogen analyzers, Iatroscan, freeze drying samples, and bomb calorimetry preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of the biological sciences with a background in aquatic sciences, fisheries science, or aquaculture for conducting practical phases of a research program, some of which may have non-standard technical problems that must be coordinated with others preferred. Experience in design, construction, and operation of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) for a variety of marine finfish species for utilization in nutritional and physiological studies which includes husbandry, water quality, live feeds, and larviculture preferred. Ability to work nontraditional schedule including weekends, evenings and/or holidays in ition to regular workweek required. Must be able to travel periodically to field locations and/or to conduct other professional activities.
